Former Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva has stated that he is extremely happy with the result achieved by the Croatians against Cameroon in the World Cup 2014 group stages. Despite being in a group containing hosts Brazil, Croatia have done well up until this point. They lost in the opening match against Brazil 3-1, but this match was littered with several controversial decisions including a penalty for the hosts. Croatia then came back in stunning fashion to register 4-0 win over Cameroon in the next group match.
As a result of this positive result, they head into the final match of the group against Mexico looking to secure a place in the last 16 stage. It is easier said than done because Mexico have been looking very good in the tournament so far. After getting a narrow win over Cameroon in the first match, they went on to get a 0-0 draw against Brazil. As a result, they can afford to get a draw and still qualify for the knockout stages, which is not the case for Croatia. This has forced former Arsenal striker Eduardo to say that Mexico will be the favourites.
After the appointment of Miguel Herrera, the Mexicans have gone on a real good run of form that has put them on the verge of a last 16 place. “I have to be honest and say that we are happy with the result against Cameroon. It was a great match for the Croatian national team, but the match that should be forgotten as soon as possible and turn to a crucial game on Monday. As for the match with Mexico, I admit Mexicans are favorites. I believe that they adjustes to the temperature and the climate in general better,” said the striker.
The return of Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic was a major reason in the win.
